PUNJAB EXCELS IN FISH PRODUCTION, PRODUCES 6560 KG OF FISH PER HECTARE: DHUGGA


  • RECORD PRODUCTION OF FISH EXPECTED IN PUNJAB THIS YEAR, TO CROSS 1 LAKH TONNES
  • PROPOSAL OF RS 4987 LAKH SENT FOR FIVE YEAR PLAN (2012-2017)

 CHANDIGARH, OCTOBER 1: The Punjab Government set to cross 1 lakh tonnes of fish production in the current year 2012-13, which would be record production in the country and more than 8,000 tonnes from the fixed target of 93,000 tonnes.
Disclosing this here, Mr. Des Raj Dhugga, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Fish Farming and Dairy Development said the state government is committed to provide better facilities to fish farmers. Divulging the details, Mr. Dhugga, said that more than 50,000 farmers were earning their livelihood directly or indirectly through fish farming. He said that by producing 6,560 kilograms of fish per acre, Punjab has become number one state in fish farming besides playing a significant role in agriculture diversification.
          Mr. Dhugga said that Punjab Government has reserved Rs.10 crore for the development of fish farming in the state, which would be spent on the modernization and maintenance of village ponds besides providing variety of fishes to the farmers on subsidized rates. He also said that Punjab Government has also chalked out a strategy to construct new ponds especially for fish farming at Bathinda, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Moga.
